MFWTK. He found a Bitcoin wallet.dat file on an old drive. How does he check how much money is in it?

Edit: to clarify. My friend's brother got into Bitcoins for like 2 days. According to My friend's brother it contained a fraction of a fraction of a bitcoin. Which was mere cents at the time. Nobody remembers the exact amount but it is probably no bigger than 0.01. Which is about $80 today. Not big money at all.
My friend's brother eventually moved to a different country and my friend recently took his old computer to salvage the hard drive. And he found a folder on origin labeled "Bitcoin". Obviously it isn't big money but he feels compelled to give his brother his money. Or at least buy the bitcoins.

I have an old Bitcoin wallet .dat file, but I have no idea what to do with it

What I've read online so far has been rather confusing, and I'm looking for some guidance on how to access my wallet should I ever need to. The only information have on the wallet is the file itself. The name of the file is 34 alphanumeric (upper and lower) characters.
Can anyone lend me some guidance? I briefly dabbled with mining a few years back and I'd like to get into it again.

Strip transaction data from bitcoin wallet.dat file

Hey! Wondering if anyone's found a way to do this? My wallet has grown to particularly big size from all the transaction data stored in the wallet. Is there any way to strip it of transactions, so that I can back it up more efficiently? Of course, with my private keys stored securely, loading the wallet with a valid blockchain will recover all those transactions if I ever need to recover it.
--rescan and --reindex keep the transactions in the wallet.

Dipping my toes in, question about relationship between wallet.dat and wallet.jmdat

Hi,
I'm trying this thing out finally and when I first started I did the wallet-tool generate thing and saw that it made a wallet.jmdat file.
Then when I did wallet-tool wallet.jmdat I got an RPC error from core saying that I needed to enter the passphrase.
Well I did enter the passphrase, so that was confusing, but after a while I realized that joinmarket was attempting to import all of the addresses from wallet.jmdat into my wallet file that Bitcoin Core had open, and that wallet was encrypted with a different key than the jmdat file.
I took the passphrase off of the (empty) wallet that bitcoin core had, and then wallet-tool wallet.jmdat ran just fine, and imported its addresses to the empty bitcoin core wallet.
So this is all seems very counter-intuitive to me. Why is joinmarket trying to interact with my bitcoin core wallet file? I thought I used generate so that joinmarket would create its OWN wallet file and that it wouldn't need to go use another wallet file made by Bitcoin Core.
What was the encryption key I entered during wallet-tool generate supposed to be? Was that supposed to be the encryption key to the bitcoin wallet.dat file? Or was that supposed to be a fresh encryption key for encrypting the jmdat file?
I don't like having the bitcoin wallet.dat file unencrypted obviously. If I encrypt it again, will joinmarket stop functioning?
I'm going to work my way through experimenting, but I feel like there is something fundamental that I missed along the way.
Can you you help me get my head screwed on properly here?
Thanks,

Question regarding downloading blockchain

Hi i have some litecoin and bitcoin wallet.dat files. I posted a question in the other bitocin forum, not same quesiton, before i discovered this beginners forum. I bought the coins from bitbargain in 2017 and have wallet.dat files for them, but have no clue which is bitcoin wallet.dat or which is litecoin wallet.dat. Also, i made many copies of them, as Ive got through 3 laptops since then. I have the computer on all day playing flash games and am a bit worried about it catching fire if I download the whole blockchain. Can anyone explain in idiots terms how I can just download from 2017 onwards, or whether I can just download back to beginning of 2017, ie, downloading part of the blockchains. Also, as I have so many wallets, and copies and cannot tell which is which, will it mess things up if i try putting the wrong wallet in the blockchain. Last question, I didnt back up the wallets, just pressed ctrl+c is that ok as I cannnot tell which are originals. Thanks
